This Fig & Peacock Bookmark features a stylised detail from the wallpaper design by Walter Crane, ca. 1895.

A colour woodblock print on paper, the design depicted peacocks amongst the foliage of fig trees on a pale background.

Born in Liverpool, Crane was an artist and book illustrator.  

He was a committed socialist who saw art as a tool for transforming society.

Considered to be the most influential, and among the most prolific, children's book creators of his generation including well recognised Faerie Queen pictures.  He was good friends with fellow artist William Morris.
