William Morris
Poet, Industrialist, Designer
Willow Bough, 1887 Double sided large bookmark with ribbon.
Willow Bough is one of William Morris' popular repeating designs for textiles.
"Botany was one of the most popular scientific fields in Victorian England: affordable and easily taken up as a hobby by anyone with access to the outdoors, it had wide appeal to the general public. Morris had an extensive knowledge of British flora and fauna built up through observation and study, on which he was able to draw when he sat down to undertake a design. Yet his flowers have little in common with the realistic style of botanical illustrations popularized in books and periodicals from the period. Instead Morris's flowers are a mixture of stylized versions of the real thing, and recognizable flowers that he returned to over and over again."
