Weka Bird with Sound 15cm

Weka are a large (about the size of a chicken), flightless, brown bird that are well known for their curious and feisty personalities.

They can be found in forests, sub-alpine grasslands, sand dunes and rocky shores.

Weka are omnivores and enjoy a diet of berries and seeds as well as worms, beetles, spiders - even frogs and mice.

They build their nests on the ground under the cover of thick vegetation and, if food is plentiful, they can raise up to four broods a year. 

In addition to their scavenging. behaviour exposing them to risk, Weka are also threatened by predators, including ferrets, stoats, and rats.
