Karearea are the only remaining bird of prey endemic to New ZEaland.  They differ from the more common Swamp Harrier, being half the size and usually catching food on the wing, rather than eating carrion. 

Mainly found inheavy bush and the steep high country of the South Island, they are rarely seen north of the Central North Island.
